Ghost Stories for Christmas with Edwyrdian Tales: A Spooktacular Night Out for the Brave

Posted on October 9, 2026 By admin

Fancy a little festive fright, bach? Forget cosy Christmas films, hot chocolate and snuggling under a blanket… well, actually, keep the blanket handy because you might need something to hide behind!

Now, I absolutely LOVE a bit of spooky season, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll happily watch a scary film while simultaneously shouting at the characters not to go into that creepy old house. But what if, instead of watching a horror story unfold on a screen, you could experience the chills, thrills and spine-tingling suspense LIVE?

Well, lovely lot, prepare yourselves, because Edwyrdian Tales: Ghost Stories for Christmas is bringing a whole host of haunting horrors to venues across the UK this November and December. And yes, they’re coming to Wales too!

So, grab your bravest mate, pop the Christmas shopping on hold for an evening and prepare for a festive night out with a difference. Just don’t blame me if you end up checking under the bed before you go to sleep!

A Christmas Treat with a Rather Sinister Twist…

There’s something wonderfully creepy about a ghost story at Christmas, isn’t there?

While the rest of us are busy untangling fairy lights, arguing over when the tree should go up and wondering how on earth Christmas has rolled around AGAIN, Edwyrdian Tales invites us into a much darker festive world.

Created by writer, actor and storyteller Matthew Wood, Edwyrdian Tales brings classic Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories to life through atmospheric storytelling that will have you hanging on every word.

Think mysterious goings-on, eerie forests, things that go bump in the night and the kind of supernatural shenanigans that would make even the bravest of us sleep with the landing light on!

Matthew has spent years creating and performing immersive historical and horror experiences at some of Britain’s most impressive heritage sites, including the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace. He’s also brought his performances to venues such as Whitby Abbey and the Jersey Museum of Country Life.

So, when it comes to creating an atmosphere that’ll send a shiver down your spine, you’re in rather experienced hands.

Although, perhaps don’t sit too comfortably in the dark…

Three Haunting Tales to Ruin Your Christmas Tree Shopping!

This year’s Ghost Stories for Christmas features three wonderfully unsettling tales, combining classic supernatural fiction with an original story from Matthew himself.

And trust me, after hearing these, you might never look at your Christmas decorations in quite the same way again!

1. Lucky’s Grove by H.R. Wakefield

2. The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood

3. The Elder Son – An Original Tale by Matthew Wood

Who Is the Man Behind the Ghost Stories?

Matthew Wood is the creative force behind Edwyrdian Tales, a storyteller with a passion for ghost stories, weird fiction and immersive theatre.

Edwyrdian Tales began in 2020, when Matthew moved his performances from historic venues into the online world. As things opened up again, the stories returned to live audiences, eventually leading to nationwide tours of Ghost Stories for Christmas in 2024 and 2025.

His work draws inspiration from legendary authors including M.R. James, Edith Nesbit, Bram Stoker, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft and Algernon Blackwood.

These are the writers who helped shape the supernatural stories we still love today, and Matthew’s performances bring their strange, unsettling worlds to life for a modern audience.

His work has also received praise from The Slab Press, which described his performance of Lovecraft’s The Outsider as a marvellous rendition that kept the audience captivated.

And The Guardian has praised Matthew’s work with immersive theatre company The Key of Dreams.

In other words, this isn’t just someone standing in a room reading a spooky story. It’s an atmospheric one-man performance, directed and haunted by Matthew himself.

Sounds like a proper treat for anyone who loves a little mystery, macabre storytelling and a night out that’s a bit different from the usual dinner-and-drinks routine!

Spooky Stories Are Coming to Wales!

My Final Thoughts: A Festive Fright Worth Staying Up For?

If you’re fed up with the same old festive outings and fancy something a little more unusual this Christmas, Ghost Stories for Christmas sounds like a brilliant option.

It’s theatrical, atmospheric, steeped in classic supernatural storytelling and just the right amount of creepy for those long winter nights.

I can already imagine the scene: a darkened room, an audience sitting in complete silence, the storyteller weaving a tale of supernatural terror… and one person in the back suddenly regretting that extra cup of tea because they’re too scared to leave their seat!

Whether you’re a lifelong horror fan, a lover of gothic literature or simply someone who enjoys a good fright, this could be a fantastic evening out with friends, your other half or anyone who appreciates a story that’ll send a shiver down their spine.

And for us Welsh folk, having dates at Brangwyn Hall, Castell Coch and Caerphilly Castle makes it even more tempting.

Just remember, lovely lot: the Christmas tree might look innocent, the woods might seem peaceful and that handmade gift might be wrapped beautifully…

But you never quite know what’s lurking beneath the surface.

So, who’s brave enough to book a ticket? And more importantly, who’s volunteering to walk back to the car afterwards?

Nadolig Llawen… and sweet dreams, if you can manage them!

This post is a promotional feature for Edwyrdian Tales. Please check the official website for ticket availability and any updates to the tour schedule before travelling.

RØRY – BLOODLETTING: An Album That Bleeds, Screams and Somehow Makes You Feel Less Alone

Posted on September 17, 2026

In August of this year, my 11-year-old son and I got to listen to the entire BLOODLETTING album by RØRY, with the listening event hosted by RØRY herself. And honestly… what an amazing opportunity. It was one of those experiences where you walk in thinking you’re going to listen to…
